Can You succeed at Blogging?

13 December 2007 No Comment

The Blogging Gold Rush.  Do you have what it takes to Make Money Online?  Every day more blogs and/or websites are started with the intention of Making Money.  Starry eyed dreamers read a blog post from John Chow and they think hey….I could do that.  Blogging is easy.  Surprise.

The reasons of course will vary from person to person but in my experience over the years as both an entrepreneur and netpreneur, most people fail for the same reason.  They have unrealistic expectations of how difficult it is to compete in the business world and are ill prepared for it.   People are trained to grow up, go to school, get an education, get a job, save money and retire.   That’s the typical lifespan of your average person.

People are not taught to think like an entrepreneur let alone think like someone who has a lot of money.  They look for the big score, the easy way out.  The lottery win.  Heck they wouldn’t even know what to do with the money if they DID hit it big.  One would only have to look at all of the lottery winners who HAVE hit it big but they within a few years they have lost it all and are back to work at the factory full time, right where they started.

It’s not their fault, they are programmed from birth to think the way they do.

If you are considering the plunge then make sure you are well aware of the obstacles that are ahead of you.  If you plan to enter the Make Money Online gold rush then know up front, it won’t be easy.  You won’t be a millionaire working two hours a day, regardless of what you might read in an ad on a website.   It will take time, it will take effort, it will take dedication, it will take skill, it likely will even take a monetary investment.  Sorry to burst your bubble but making money is hard work, no matter what.

Let’s look at some of the reasons people fail to succeed.

1. Unrealistic expectations.  Too many people think that all it takes to make money with a blog is to write some posts, litter the posts with adsense and put some cheesy ads on the blog.  Wrong.   You need to have content that people WANT to read.   Creating good content takes time, effort and talent and you need to understand up front exactly what you are getting into.  You will WORK at least several hours a day to make any serious money.  Period.

2. Lack of perseverance. Achieving success at anything is going to take time and effort.  Think about your life over the last 3 or 4 years.  Are you the type of person that finishes what you start?  Do you need very little supervision at work to be productive?  Do you typically achieve your goals?  Do you succeed at most things you try?  If so then the entrepreneurial lifestyle might be for you.

On the flip side you might be the person that tried MLM but quite after the 2nd week because it took too much time.  You might have been the one who bought into a pitch website and sent 49.99 for a make money program but then never really started because Lost was on the night you got it.  You might be the one who tried selling Amway but didn’t feel like knocking on people’s doors.   Which kind of person you are will determine your success.

3. No Talent. Face it, not everyone has the talent or personality required to generate content that people will want to read.  Nobody wants to read the ramblings of a fake or a phony.  If you’ve never made a nickel online in your life then don’t try to pretend you have.  If you don’t know the first thing about blogging, don’t start up a blog about blogging.

If I could give anyone just starting out one bit of advice it would be to find something that you excel at and then develop your site around your strengths.  I’d love to be an NBA basketball player but I have no talent.  No matter how hard I try, no matter how hard I practice, no matter how much I might dream of doing it….I won’t be playing in the NBA anytime soon.  Play to your strengths, nobody wants to read content from a jack of all trades but master of none.
