Dominate your Niche with Perfect Keywords

dominate1.jpgDo you want to dominate your niche or are you content to settle for being #684k in a google search?

Do you want to know how small sites are able to show up #1 over much larger sites?

I assure you that it doesn’t happen by accident and you won’t get any different results than you always have unless you start trying a new approach.

This article will discuss how to find a set of keywords that will allow you to build a site that acts like a black hole, meaning it will suck any visitors in for search terms that you never even considered when originally setting it up.   It is aimed at beginners who are just starting to build niche sites and want to know how to get results quickly!

Most niche site builders put very little effort into their keywords.  If the site is about dogs, then dogs, canine, dog, etc will be their keywords, and they think that will be relevant search terms.   You will quickly see that it isn’t and this level of effort will bury your niche site amongst the millions of pages about dogs on Google.

If you are serious about building a niche site that can rank, then the first thing I would do is read my article about “Hunting the Perfect Niche” that I wrote last week.  In that article we discussed how to select an appropriate niche that will give you the best chance at ranking very high in a Google search.

Finding the right niche is only the first step.  You still have to figure out how to get people there…..and what keywords you will build your site around.  That’s what this article will do.

What our goal here is to identify search terms that are similar, but different, than your original set of keywords.  These will expand the number of potential searches exponentially in many cases and really be a traffic sucker if you do it right.  Before we get started it is important that you have access to  WordTracker or a similar keyword search tool that will provide quality results.

WordTracker is currently offering a free trial of their software right now so take advantage of it.

 Vegas Coupons

Let’s continue the example that I started in my first article,  “Hunting the Perfect Niche Site” and we will use “Vegas Coupons”  for a potential niche site.

Step 1 is go to your Wordtracker or keyword search tool and type in Vegas Coupons for our main keywords.  The 15 top related results are below.

coup1.jpg
What we want to do next is to identify a few keywords that are related to our main keyword but that might yield different results.  In our example here I am going to use Vegas Restaurant Coupons, Vegas Restaurant Guide and Vegas Dining Guide as my terms.  I don’t think these are ideal though as the casino side of Las Vegas appears to be missing.

We’ll run with these for now and let’s refer to them as “target keywords” from here on out. Before we continue, it is important to realize that this is where most people stop, in fact, many would be proud of the “keyword research” that they put into their site.  A BIG mistake and if you limit your copy to these 3 or 4 keywords then you could potentially miss tens of thousands of searches related to your niche site.

Once you complete this article you will be amazed how easy it is to DOMINATE your competition.   You can do it because they are lazy and you are not.  They will settle for mediocrity and settle for 3 or 4 keywords, while we want to build an arsenal of 10, 20 even 100 keywords and crush them.  Sounds fun doesn’t it.

“Keyword Matrix”

Let’s keep going,  the next step is to go back to your keyword tracker and search on each of your 3  ”target keywords” and get the 15 related terms for each of these.  Let’s do Vegas Restaurant Coupons first.

Now you have 15 related keywords for your 2nd target keyword and at this point you should have 30 ish potential keywords from your two searches.  I log my keywords into an excel sheet for ease of tracking but you can use whatever format works for you.

Now you repeat the step you just took for each of your target keywords and add the related results from each to the spreadsheet.  My sheet looks like this once it is full, we’ll call it our ”Keyword Matrix.”

Keyword matrix.
Are all of these ideal keywords for your site?  Probably not, but you have 60 related search terms that you can select the best choices from.  Delete the keywords that are completely not relevant and do a search on one of your sub terms to yield more results. In theory you could repeat this process until you have hundreds of relevant keywords.  I don’t condone this and in my experience if you can get 30 to 40 great keywords then you will KILL those who stopped at 3 or 4.

Don’t forget what I mentioned earlier, most of your competitors never even get past the first step, nevermind all the way to having their very own “matrix” of a hundred relevant keywords.  Easy pickings for someone who is willing to invest the time and research.

It comes down to a question of whether you want to Dominate Your Niche or do you want to be buried in Google at #647k?    WordTracker will allow you to identify keywords with laserlike focus and they even offer a free trial so make sure you sign up today and give it a whirl.

Stay tuned for the next installment as we will take the keyword matrix, select the best performing keywords and start to build our niche site.

Thanks so much! I’m working on a website right now that has an extremely niche market, and this will be perfect for determining which are the BEST keywords to include in the copy! Thanks again!

Hey thanks Erica. It’s not a perfect system by any means but its far superior than what most site owners do and that is picking key words based on what they think they would search on.

Some niches will lend themselves well to this style of keyword selection and others may pose a more difficult challenge.

Thanks for the comments….I might ask you for help some day with setting up a list…something I have failed to do yet.
