Make Money Blogging – Scratchback
Make Money Bloggers are always searching for ways to improve the monetization of their blogs and I am no different.
I have been offering text links for sale for nearly a month now and have only sold one spot. Dismal but I make myself feel better by justifying that they are NoFollow text links. My thought is that nobody wants to buy a NoFollow maybe? Wishful thinking? I dunno but I do know that I want no part of the wrath of Google.
Scratch My Back
I was reading a blog tonight that offered up a monetization channel that I hadn’t considered yet and that is Scratchback. Scratchback has been around for a while and I shunned it at first as they market it as a “tip jar” for your blog.
I despise tip jars on blogs. They remind me of the guy on the corner with the “Will Work for Beer” sign. I hate how tip jars have sprung up at every retailer from where you get your coffee to who gives you the popcorn at the theater. I hate em. I really don’t want a “tip jar” on my blog.
I think I have decided to revisit my phobia after seeing it become quite prevalent on so many blogs. I have decided to put my phobia aside for a bit and give it a shot.
One thing that I really like is that the Scratchback widget does give the “tipper” something in return. So in my mind I am not going to call it a tip jar and I am going to make myself feel better and refer to it as a “Money Maker.”
Somehow that makes me feel better.
Buy One Now
I have offered up only 5 spots on my widget for 5 dollars each. A bargain compared to some sites I have seen. I may expand to 10 slots depending on how popular it goes but for now feel free to give it a try.
How about you….do you use Scratchback? What are your results? Am I insane for not liking tip jars? Let me hear it.

I must say I find it a little odd too. People having problems selling text links, and yet their scratch backs…..also no follow links…..are filled 10-20 spots at a time.
Go figure lol
Novelty maybe? I feel as you do (or did) about tip jars, so I’ll wait a bit to see if the novelty of it wears off or people stick in a bit. This will also give me more time to build up traffic – always good when wanting to sell

I used Scratchback for a while. I stopped. I guess the reason is that when I visited other sites using it, I really didn’t notice the links either. It looks like just another blogroll. I questioned how much people actually got in return of visits for it. It also takes up a lot of space. But, then. I may be a little more impressed with those that advertise in the way that you have up at the top of your site. In my little head it has an effect, in the way that they are more serious or willing to pay a little more to advertise on a site.

I tried them, at $1/link with auto bump. Sold a few but useless – Paypal takes a cut. If you don’t have autobump, it just becomes like a regular (sold) Blogroll – use OIO for that

@Tam if nothing else it’s a sitewide backlink so that has some value as well….like for instance on my blog I currently have approximately 150 pages give or take so that is 150 backlinks for 5 bucks.
@Jason – I put it up yesterday at 5 bucks a pop and have sold two so far this morning. Maybe you under priced it? At 1 dollar you won’t get but 60 or so cents. I would say that is useless too.
i want to ad and ads to on my tongue language blog. but didnt know what price it should be maybe i can ask for your advice
my blog is pr3
alexa 980.000
and have 900 +/- unique user each month

@Pandi – Hard telling. I would start at 5 dollars and go from there. If you don’t sell any at that then you might consider removing it altogether. I have seen some put it up at 1 dollar or even 2 dollars but after fees you don’t get a whole lot of money.
Experiment and see what works for you.
Is yours on autobump, or is it throughout the month?

The problem selling text link ads just goes to show, people were doing it for SEO purposes not for advertising and gaining clients/readers/leads.
The scratchback looks interesting, though I am not sure it is a long term option.

@Jason – autobump. Do you see an advantage of one to the other? I didn’t expect to sell so many so quickly so I am going to increase the number to 10 and if guaranteeing it for a month sells more then I can do that.
@Tom – Maybe not but I must say I am impressed so far. 3 links in 3 days…granted they are dirt cheap but still, not too bad.
I tried this for about a month and didn’t get any offers then my site fell out of google. not sure if the two are related as I have a low traffic blog anyway but I pulled it just in case
