Day after day so many of you trudge around the internet trying to find the secret to making money blogging. Well I am happy to say that your search is over and you have found your answer. Keep reading to find out what it is.
Day in and day out you diligently search for the answers to Making Money with Your Blog. You go from Make Money Blog to Make Money Blog, somehow hoping that today is the day you will find that post that tells you everything you need to know.
NeverBlue, Adsense, Private Ads, Kontera, Audio Ads, Affiliate Marketing, Ebook sales, Video ads, Google, Yahoo Ad Center, Pepperjam….you name it, and they all claim that this is the secret. All you need to do is click my link and your dreams will come true.
Every Make Money Blog out there rehashes this same useless pile of crapola information for you daily. At the end of the week you should be more confused than you were at the start of the week and that is EXACTLY what they want.
The problem is that sooner or later you will stumble across a GOOD affiliate marketer. One that really knows how to separate you from your money and they will prey on your confusion.
Confused people are exactly what they want.
Confused people don’t think rationally, they are emotional and that is good for the marketer. You hit their landing page at just the right time, confused, frustrated and looking for answers and they promise to give them to you. You name it and they can help you, right after you pay this one time 97 dollar fee.
Do you want to know a secret? These guy selling these books or systems to you don’t know what they’re doing either. They aren’t rich, that isn’t their house on the landing page, they don’t live in Tahiti and they don’t work 2 hours a day.
In most cases they are a bunch of complete and total liars who don’t know any more than how to take advantage of the fact that you are so confused that you will listen to anyone who at least sounds like they know what they are talking about.
The secret to making money with your blog, isn’t to sign up for Kontera using JohnChowRocks as your signup code, it isn’t playing those STUPID audio ads for every visitor dumb enough to stumble across your hack blog. It isn’t signing up everyone you know for Agloco or any of the other 3 million complete and total wastes of time.
Here’s a well kept secret.
The secret to making money with your blog is to build a blog that someone wants to visit.
What? Captain Obvious checking in. Maybe but how many MMO blogs are written for the readers enjoyment? Very few if the truth be told.
Build your blog for your readers. Build something with great content and a unique perspective on a topic and that will attract readers. Your real goal building a blog isn’t to make money, but rather to build your traffic and your readers. A site full of affiliate links and program sign ups is not going to interest anyone.
You’ve searched for it for months, so here it is. The real secret to Making Money with Your Blog.
If you Build a High Quality Blog, then the Money Will Find You.
Confused? Let’s dig a bit.
If you read John Chow’s Income report then you will see that of the 29k dollars he claimed in income, approximately 20k dollars of it was from either ReviewMe or Private Ad Sales. These ads and Reviews ONLY come because John has the traffic and the Alexa to guarantee them a certain amount of impressions.
John is an anomaly that would be hard to ever duplicate again. His traffic doesn’t come to read his blog, they come hoping that they finally stumble across the secret and they come to try to be the first to comment on his article so they get a backlink and maybe some referral traffic.
Contrast John with say ProBlogger or CopyBlogger. Completely different types of blogs but ones that probably if the truth were told, make far more money than John Chow does. They just choose not to disclose it. Read each blog, which would you be most proud to call your own?
If John didn’t have the traffic that he does then his income would be non-existent. Your goal isn’t to make money, it’s to build readers. Traffic must come first. Period.
I have noticed that as my blog gains readers and traffic that advertisers are seeking me out. Instead of having to pump some crappy e-book that I don’t believe in to make a few bucks, I can just write posts about what I want to talk about.
I can blog about Entrecard being a drug dealer or Make Money Blogs that Should be Killed. Good topics that are fun to write and hopefully make for an enjoyable read.
In the last 30 days I have noticed a dramatic increase in my ad sales and contacts requesting sponsored reviews etc.
Before I get ahead of myself, I know my place on the ladder right now. I am selling my advertising because it is quite reasonably priced for the impressions that you get. As I continue to gain readers, drop Alexa and build my Technorati rankings then the demand will increase even higher and I will be able to price accordingly.
I am still working my original plan and that is to learn how to blog by building a blog that I enjoy writing and hopefully you enjoy reading.
John can pump all the affiliate links on the planet, I couldn’t catch up to him if I tried in that arena. He and a few others, have way too far of a headstart on you or I to catch them now. That would be like trying to compete against Wal-Mart. If that’s your thing and you don’t mind writing a blog that has the same content as 2.3 billion others then have at it.
Too often the answer is right in front of us. In my mind the answer is as easy (or as difficult) as building a first class blog and then letting advertisers come to me. Monetizing a popular blog is a snap, any fool can do it. Trying to monetize a blog that has 6 figure Alexa rankings is a lesson in frustration.
Which camp are you in? A John Chow clone or are you going to blaze your own trail?

1I’m gonna tear my hair out the next time I see another John-Chow-filled blog. Lately, all the ones I frequent have been posting a series of apocalyptic awakenings: the money doesn’t lie in the ads, but the CONTENT. It’s good to see someone pointing this out.

2I have to say, i totally agree with you on this one. Although Ive only been blogging for a few months, from day one i told myself i wasn’t going to even try to monetize my site for at least 12 months. I firmly believed that the only way to make a decent living from blogging was to try and build the readership before you implement the ads.
There is absolutely no point in having adverts on your site if you have nobody on your site to click them for you, or to entice advertisers to want to pay you for their ad spot, so the only way to make real money from blogging, is to first build readership, so i think you hit the nail right on the head with that one bill.

3You have a point and this has been the way of the web since the start. Would Yahoo be where they are if they didn’t have the traffic to get the high priced banner ads they received 10-15 years ago?
If you build it they will come should be the motto of all bloggers starting out (me included).

5You are absolutely right about writing a blog for your readers. I had to do some thinking last week, and I decided to get rid of my pay per post program, because it cheapens and dilutes my blogs.
Then I decided on my humor blog to just post nothing but humorous stories and pictures. I want to give readers what they are looking for. Simple as that.
My blog marketing tips as well. I did the same thing. My alexa was 224,000+ last week, as of today it is 216,000+, so I feel like I am making progress. I also took most of the affiliate stuff off. Only leaving Adsense on my humor blog and mostly adsense on my blog marketing tips blogs.
It’s important to remember why we started blogging in the first place.

6Good article and I of course agree.
On a weird note…
The picture of the couple are friends of mine. Out of the 7 billion people in the world and the trillions if not more pics on the net you pick 2 of my friends.
What a small world.

7@Jake - Wow. What a small world, I found it on the net of course just by typing in the word secret.
@Teasa - NICE job on the Alexa. It can be a slow and steady race but as long as it keeps going down you know you are doing something right.
@Jim - The site Sponsored Reviews requires more than traffic. You want PR, Alexa and I think Technorati if I recall correctly. I get contacted fairly regularly through my contact page but I have turned most of them down so far.
@Andy - Glad you agree and I appreciate you coming by, hope you return.
@Crystal - Careful cause it WILL happen. Hope you don’t mind wearing a wig.

9That was encouraging! I agree that JohnChow.com doesn’t exactly provide any useful information each time I visit, however for some reason, I still check it out every day or two.
As for the secret to making money, I don’t know that there is one. There are likely many. Each blog that I read has a distinctive look and feel to it, and I read each one for a different reason. Some have a humorous side to them, others have detailed technical information and others tend to be filled with a lot of opinions. If each blogger sticks with what they’re good at and does it long enough, I’m sure success will follow. Most bloggers just give up before they’re somewhat successful.
For me, it’s a passion for blogging, the internet etc that drive me to keep going. Without that, I would have given up after a week.
great post.
