Make Money Online Blogs Should All Be Killed

7 March 2008 54 Comments

Make Money blogging

Have you noticed the underlying dislike for Make Money Online blogs? You can find bloggers in every corner that have absolutely no hesitation to tell you how much they dislike you and your blog without ever having read it. They base this on nothing more than your blog topic.

If you’re a Make Money Online Blog then you might as well be a convicted felon. You are accused, tried, judged and sentenced all in the blink of an eye.

Bloggers Despise Make Money Onliners

I have to admit when I started blogging I was really kind of naive and unskilled in the politics of the blogging world. I have learned a metric ton over the last few months but one thing became clear quite quickly and it bothered me a lot:

Bloggers despise Make Money Onliners.

At first I was taken aback and quite defensive about the subject. It really made me angry that people would dismiss my blog or myself in the blink of an eye and I wasn’t going to stand for it. I have had a number of heated exchanges on blog catalog and through the comments section of various sites, and I took the stance that I would defend myself to the end. Taking it too personally? Yep!

Guilty without a Trial

guiltyI recently signed up for the Perfomancing Hive over at Performancing to see what they had to offer. They have a welcome forum that allows you to introduce yourself to the community and say hello. I introduced myself and said hello and one of the first few responses one member asked:

“if you’ve only been blogging for 3 months then why did you choose to be a MMO blog? Why are you pretending to be something you’re not?”

Pow…Right between the eyes! He had never even been to my blog!!!

At first I was perturbed, then I became ticked off and finally I hit the homicidal rage level for a few minutes. Fairly soon thereafter I calmed down enough to answer his jab somewhat reasonably. I’ve never pretended to be anything that I am not, at least not since I tried to buy beer with a fake id when I was 20 years old. Guilty!

If I don’t know how to do something I won’t write about it. I admit my experience level and I posted my true earnings a few days ago for my first month of monetization. I assure you that someone who is a “pretender” is going to be post an income report of 420 dollars.

I don’t need to make money online, I just enjoy the challenge and I simply would never put my integrity at risk to make a couple of bucks.

Lessons from Sun Tzu

Sun TzuI have always found it to my advantage when attacked to put myself in the attackers shoes. Where are they coming from? What is their point of view? Why do they think this way?

I am a fan of history and one of history’s master strategists was Sun Tzu. He was a master at outsmarting his opponent with strategy and would often with a battle before it really had even begun. He took great pains to understand his opponent before going to battle with him.

  • Know your enemy and know yourself and you can fight a hundred battles without disaster ~ Sun Tzu

I need to understand where these haters are coming from if I am going to be able to overcome it.

I have perused dozens of MMO blogs over the last 3 months but I have found a very select few that I would bother going back. I have about 30ish blogs in my feed reader right now and I would say 10 or less are what I consider MMO blogs. It would seem to me that a MMO blogger would have a hundred of these blogs in the reader in order to make sure he/she was current as current could be.

Then it Hit Me.

Make Money Online Blogs are Crap

Make Money BloggingMost Make Money Online blogs are completely full of crap. I have come across hundreds and hundreds yet less than a dozen of them made my reader?

E-books, affiliate programs, inflated earnings reports, crappy paid post after crappy paid post. It was starting to become clear.

But wait a minute…the blog world is FULL of blogs that are crap. 99% of them are probably full of crap. Why the hypocrisy?

  • Self Help blogs – definitely full of crap.
  • Weight Loss blogs – yep, more crap.
  • Mommy Blogs – oh yeah, tons of crap!
  • Psychic Blogs – you guessed it….more crap.
  • Investing Blogs – Wow! more crap.

Why do none of these blogs experience the utter hatred Make Money Online blogs enjoy?

Garry Conn is a Madman

Garry Conn Dot comOne of the blogs that I recently added to my reader was Garry Conn. I read a post he made the other day where he was ranting like a madman against MMO blogs.

I enjoyed his rant and COMPLETELY agreed with what he had to say. I enjoyed it so much I took the time to comment, which for me, isn’t that common. I really need to come up with a better commenting strategy.

So here I am enjoying the heck out of Garry’s post, cheering him on and this Fecker takes a shot at ME! Where does the madness stop? Garry has a philosophy to build a great blog that will be popular and have enough traffic that he can make money via advertising…..which is MY plan!

He has a huge disdain for e-books. ME TOO!

He hates blogs that are nothing but affiliate pumps. ME TOO!

He hates blogs that pretend to be something they are not. ME TOO!

I can’t even get some love from a guy who shares my exact philosophy and point of view towards make money onliners.

The Answer

The answer to why bloggers despise MMO bloggers was found right in Garry’s comment section for that very post. I have excerpted the comment from Garry.

It does matter when you and others mislead people into thinking that they can learn how to make money online. You make money off the people who want to learn. You trick them into buying garbage eBooks and trick them into investing money into programs that offer false hope and dreams that will never come true.

How does that compare to my maturity level? I think your site looks identical to many other sites that publish the same garbage and noise. You don’t help people, you use people. Throw all the stones and daggers you want at me. In the end, I am the one laughing to the bank and you’re not. You don’t make money online just like the many others that pretend to be a “Super Star” expert in the business.

There it is. People are fed up to here with bloggers who know nothing about making money online yet try to pretend they do. They lure people in who are naive and desperate. They are praying on the stupid.

A 3 dollar e-book on DP forums isn’t going to make you a millionaire dummy. Get a clue.

Make Money Online blogs have become the same thing as email spam. It’s everywhere, it’s annoying as hell, it never seems to stop. They try to lure you in with false promises and incredible claims of living the good life on just 2 hours a day.

Pure Crap in it’s finest form.

If you’re a MMO blogger, do you really want to be considered the SPAM of the blogging world? This might sound harsh but it’s reality. It’s the reality that I get lumped into even though I try pretty hard NOT to be that kind of blog.

Redemption

I am by no means advocating that if the Make Money Online niche is what you enjoy and you feel you can bring value to the blogging world then by all means do it. If that is your interest then give it all you have and see where you come out.

Don’t try to blog to make money. Make money from your blogging! Blog about what you enjoy; what interests you and a topic you have something to offer. The haters will always be there but you can hold your head high if you conduct yourself with integrity and offer the best content that you are capable of producing.

Before I go…the original guy from the Hive….ended up coming to my blog and is now a subscriber. Vindication. :-)

So… What’s the Verdict? Do all Make Money Onliners have to die, or can a few of us live to see another day?

As everyone can imagine, 99.7% of all MMO blogs are completely worthless and simply feed on the greed of people who want to make an easy buck. Is there seriously any need for more than a handful of MMO blogs in the first place? Most of them simply say the same things and recycle the same content over and over.

The height of absurdity are sites like John Chow, who makes money simply by talking about his income. At what point did he stop being useful to ANYONE?

To be honest, I didn’t subscribe to this blog because I thought you could teach me anything. I read it because I identified with your “journey” of joining the blogging world and seeing if you could be successful and the experiences you go through.

Chuck – Thanks for the comment and I appreciate you subscribing. I’ve only been blogging 3 months but if feels like years. Is that good or bad? ;-)

This might be a good example, so don’t take this the wrong way. Your blog is a sports blog…of which their are tens of thousands.

Do you think their should only be a handful of those too?

  • Tamera said:

Well…Don’t know what to say. I have never “hated” MMO blogs, although most are crap. When you’re new to blogging it’s easy to feel like a failure when reading their bragging. Repeated content gets old quick. A few MMO bloggers will be tomorrow’s A-list blogs, and it won’t be them. I feel you tackle this niche in a unique way. you learn along with us. However, yes. Many of these bloggers take advantage of newbies that don’t know any better. I jumped off that train a long time ago, and began to tread my own path, slow and steady. My personal plan is pretty much in accordance to yours and this Garry Conn. I have the patience to stick it out. A lot of people are extremely impatient where money is concerned, and it tends to muddle decision-making. Just my two cents.

@Tam – you don’t strike me as the hating type…that’s a good thing. I am probably being a touch melodramatic for effect but you get the idea.

When you have 12 year old albine, filipino bloggers with one arm starting a blog to teach you how to make money online then you know the niche might be saturated.

    ;-)

I still love it. Blogging is fun.

  • Tamera said:

Hey. I would actually react a bit defensive myself! It’s completely human, and it’s a result of people throwing “all” into the same general assumption (bag). It’s probably that which would irritate me the most, like a stab to my integrity when they don’t even know me. It’s the “generalizing thing” people like to do, for some reason. That can enfuriate me. I’ve seen a couple of sharp comments come from you on a forum in response to generalizing. I feel that they were justified. To be honest, I thought you were a bit of a grouch before I read your blog…lol..maybe it was just your avatar influencing me. He looks pretty mean!

Anyhow. I just caught myself in socializing again..lol..better get to work. See ya.

    Bill,

I’ve seen more “blogs about blogging” than I have sports blogs. But I get your point nonetheless, and my response is still the same. As far as sports blogs goes, yes, the vast majority of them are worthless because they don’t offer any truly unique content.

I’m not trying to turn this into a “niche vs. niche” battle. But sports and MMO are too different to compare. The visitors that would go to a sports blog are there for no other reason than they want to be entertained. The typical visitor to an MMO blog is there because they’re depending on you to help them and in the “average” case… the MMO blog owner is either unable to help them, or they prioritize their own agenda over their visitors.

Chuck – I see your point and I am not trying to argue it either. I like meaningful discussion when it can happen.

Maybe a MMO blog simply likes to blog about money, niche sites, Google etc. ProBlogger is a MMO site even by his own definition but I wouldn’t lump him in with the ones we are talking about.

I find it strange that one makes the distinction about one niche being there to teach someone something while another one doesn’t have that responsibility. I don’t get that part, which is what prompted this article.

I hope for a lot more comments over the weekend.

    I love it.

@Tam – I agree….it’s the generalization that is driving me nuts. As for BC I have a sarcastic sense of humor, some people can take it the wrong way but once you get to know me it’s obvious when I am kidding and when I am not.

Grump…Nope, not usually. I did change my avatar though. :-)

I am still new to blogging and I love it. I may branch out into another niche to coincide with this one if I can manage my time. I still have a dayjob and ADMIT it, unlike some of the MMO blogs.

@Jay – Ya know I don’t mind that the other niches are full crap too. I am a “to each their own” kind of guy and if that is what they want to blog about then fine, let em. What gets me is exactly what Tamera commented about and that is the broad generalizations made and the judgement handed down that MMO blogs are crap but blogs about what my 3 yr old ate for breakfast are socially acceptable.

Ah well…it was a fun post, wriitten in jest and I hope everyone takes it that way.

@OQL – No doubt original content is almost non-existent. A writer can find his niche by offering his spin or his/her take on said content which makes it unique. You can post all the How-To articles in the world but 99 percent of people reading them aren’t going to do a thing with the information anyways. They like reading about success but aren’t willing to do the things that can make them successful.

I’ll tell you what I hate about MMO blogs. I hate the fact that you have to wade through tons of pointless posts about all the BS to get to the useful posts. I think that is the real challenge is people feel obligated to post regularly, some daily, and in trying to come up with something that often sometimes it isn’t as important as others.

Bill, what I like about your blog is your honestly, I hope it’s honestly? There are some really good blogs that talk about making money online, but the challenge is always working your way through the 99% of junk to find the diamond. Of course that’s the problem with anything on the internet. What we have to learn is how to wade through it as quickly and critically as possible. So many people want to read that tip that is going to make money for them and that just doesn’t exist. It takes hard work, creativity, and a little luck to make money (how about that, sounds like it might actually be like *gasp* working at a job!).

I think you came back around at the end to answer it well. Writing a blog because you enjoy your subject and then monetizing off that is the absolute correct way to go. A few of the most creative people stick with writing about how they find new ways to make money is fine, but when everyone out there starts to regurgitate their own list of something that has been written 100 times before because they came to a revelation. If I read another post telling me to guest blog, comment, and blah blah blah to gain readers I’m going to smack that person.

That’s it in a nutshell. I am fed up with make money blogs they really really have nothing to offer and they make blogging seem like a big ad farm instead of something creative and worth the time it takes to look at. I miss when blogs were new, before the MM types began taking over. Then blogs were real creations, not real commercials.

MMO blogs are generally written by people who are just parroting what they’ve read somewhere else … they do not add something worthwhile to the knowledge in this field. There are also mommy-bloggers out there looking for good monetizing tips. If I had been one of them, came in here, and caught that comment, I would be outta here quicker than flint…and, mad as hell. I also assume that MMO bloggers would like to enjoy a larger subscriber group than just other MMO bloggers. So, maybe it’s better that lynchers lynch themselves, and cut out the crap?

Comment form drive by. That’s hilarious.

So. We know the world runs on the 80/20 principle. In the MMO blog world, it’s probably more extreme – 95% of the income is made by 5% of the blogs.

Is this simply another form of selection? The strongest survive? I mean, what’s the average life span of a money-making-only blog vs a content blog? Eventually, we’ll peter out, or become the next pros. Circle of life and all that jazz.

We’ve been trying to make money in a variety of different ways for the past few months. We’ve generated $1064 in commissions, but we’ve spent $1327 in advertising, so right now, the grand total is we’re in the hole $263.50. Are we going to be around in a year? Who knows. If we actually do figure out how to make money, will people be interested in our blog because we actually demonstrated how tough it is? Who knows.

But we’re learning from our mistakes, right? Both January and Feburary had positive cash flow for us.

@web – Awesome. I don’t know of many businesses that are positive cash flow right out of the gate. If you are even close to break even combined with the knowledge you have gained then you are doing good in my opinion.

It would be easy to do nothing and break even but after a year you really aren’t any more knowledgeable or skilled than you were when you started. You might write better but you have no idea what types of ads convert and what types are just a waste of time.

Congrats on the positive cash flow. That’s great news.
