@Mike – I don’t know that backlinks are fading just yet although no question Google is considering alternatives. I don’t think Google would come down so hard on paid links if they were not an important piece of the SE results.

I do think that Google is searching for a better algorithm or a combination of better algorithms but currently as we stand today…backlinks are very relevant.
