My Alexa is a Bully – Blog Traffic Update

22 February 2008 6 Comments

A quick update on my blog stats for you today. I am like a broken record when it comes to talking about my stats….I think I might be OCD and if I check Alexa one more time they said they were going to throw me off the site altogether.

days.jpgI think this stems, in fact I know it stems from my competitive nature. We rank and rate EVERYTHING in my full time career and the slightest little matrix can turn into quite the competition amongst peers.

If you ever saw the scene from Days of Thunder where Roddy and Tom Cruise race the rental cars on the way to the disciplinary hearing, then you can picture my day job.

That’s why I check my stats and write about them often…they are a measure of success but also show how very far I have to go in order to reach my goals. I also write about them every so often as a historical record as well…it will be interesting to look back a year from now to these posts and see how far I’ve come since they were first written.

Another reason I am so anal about my traffic stats are my desire to monetize my blog via private ad sales. Their is no question that the better your traffic stats are then the higher prices you will be able to comman for advertising space on your site.

All this said….here is where we are at as of today.

Alexa is still dropping but the massive decreases that we saw in the first few weeks are a thing of the past….no surprise and we are posting a 124k as of tonight.

Technorati is something that I have been working on and the results are starting to show. I still have a long way to go but steady progress which will get better each and every month. I sometimes forget that my blog isn’t even yet 3 months old so it isn’t realistic to expect to compare to some sites.

PageRank…still coming in at 2. This won’t change publicly until google pushes the next update to the toolbar which I am predicting will be sometime around the end of March or first part of April. I am a PR5 according to the prediction tools that are available out there.

To give you a comparison of where my stats stand say to a John Cow type blog let’s take a look at his numbers.

  • Alexa – 16,313
  • PR – 3
  • Technorati – 1494
As you can see I have a long way to go to compare stats wise…to an A-lister…..but his blog is also 6 months older than mine so we’ll see in 6 months.

Conclusion

That’s my update for this week…it’s been a long week at the daytime job with a lot of miles travelled so my posting time has been very limited. I will be writing all weekend to get my draft file built back up again.

In the meantime I’d like to hear how you guys are faring in regards to your Alexa and maybe you could even share some traffic driving tools? Traffic cures all sins.

I track my stats a bit obsessively also. Actually, I think it’s a problem. I’m trying to limit myself to no more than 10 minutes of stat analysis each day. There are too many other things I should be doing. But hey, stats are fun and, as you said, the measure of our success! Congrats on the numbers. They are looking great.

@Thomas – No worries…nothing that a good dose of traffic won’t cure. Do you use social media to drive traffic to your site?

@Jim – I am glad I have company. :-) I am sure we are not alone.
