You might have noticed your pagerank going a little whacky starting today, at least that’s when I noticed it.  I was happy to see that I was boosted from a PR2 up to a PR4 as of today, we’ll have to see if that holds.  I am pretty pleased with a PR4 although I want to be a PR5 or higher by the end of the year.

What Is PageRank

If you aren’t sure what pagerank is then you are sure to hear about 2 different versions of what it is on blog posts over the next few days as everyone that didn’t get boosted tells you it doesn’t matter and everyone that did will tell you how great it is.

The truth lies somewhere in the middle.  PR is basically a measurement of “trust” in the eyes of Google.  The higher your PR then the more relevant they will deem your site and in theory you should start ranking better in the SERPS.

This should translate to more organic traffic as your PR increases.  I will say I have seen my SE traffic improve substantially over the last month or so climbing to about 15% of my daily traffic as of late.  This is about double the 7-8% that it as averaging.

How do You Get PageRank

Attaining pagerank is not easy as it requires you to build links from other sites to yours.  If you write compelling content that other bloggers link to often then pagerank will come easy.  If you don’t then you can build rank by commenting on other blogs, link exchanges or if you really are determined you could buy links to your site from high PR sites.

The higher the PR of the sites that link to you, then the more “juice” they pass to you.  The more links you have from higher PR sites, the better off you will be.  If you are serious about building organic traffic then you must taking your link building seriously.

Conclusion

Regardless of what you may read over the next few days, PR should be part of your blogging plan.  PageRank is a measure of respect from Google and will help you in a number of ways.  It improves your authority to advertisers, it will allow you to score better in the SERPS and will ultimately bring more traffic to your site.

It won’t cure cancer and you won’t miraculously start receiving hordes of visitors because of a PR bump but ultimately it will improve the authority of your site.

So let’s hear it, how did you make out in the PR update?

  1. Dang, Bill! I didn’t even notice until I came in here, and saw your post. Dang, again! Because, it happened about a month earlier than I thought it was going to happen. I’ve been working for a 4 this time around. I’ll settle with my “3″……for now. Heh. Congrats on your 4! I’m pleased as well with how my SE increase is coming along.

  2. Wow – I went from 0 to 4! There is a post on my blog that is 3 on it’s own – it went crazy in Stumbleupon and we recieved a ton of backlinks. I never expected such a significant jump!

  3. PR is great! (like you said for those who increase). I went from a PR1 to PR3. I guess if I dropped I wouldn’t be posting a comment or would be bashing PR.

  4. Blog went from a 0 to a 5! :) Biggest thing is I started it first of the year so in four months was able to build it up. I don’t know if I can get it any higher though… a six might be pushing it, but possible as I’ve got a few PR6 backlinks and I think one PR7 backlink.

I think the most important thing to remember about PageRank is that it is constantly changing Google just doesn’t tell us. The toolbar is a frozen value for a certain day that is outdated the day that it is posted.

Here is a great tool to check your PageRank against multiple Google Datacenters. They might all be updated by now, but it’s something to hold onto. http://oyoy.eu/google/pr/

  5. Colby…hehe. So, true! We’d be dissing PR like crazy, if we had a drop. Then we would discover all ways possible to work the system, because we all want good SE page positioning! So, people want the benefits of their service, but they just don’t like their system. I wonder if people consider the fact that we could be doing a little more on behalf of ourselves, service or product?? (I also include me as one of those humans).
