Posted by Bill as Niche Sites, Ongoing Projects

I finally found the time to get back to my niche site projects this past week and I must say I missed it. I’ve had my existing sites on cruise control for a month or two and this Project DIY Niche Site has been on hold for too long.
I’ve decided to make it a BANS site for a few reasons, the biggest one being I had not setup a new BANS site since V3.0 rolled out and I was anxious to see the differences between this and the older version I had been using.
If you haven’t been following this project then basically I am building a niche site from scratch and showing people everything as it is created. I have run into a few hurdles, not the least of which was Ebay’s decision to leave CJ and go to the Ebay Partner Network.
A niche site is built in many steps or “layers” if you will. What we’ve already accomplished is determining our niche and finding an aged domain for the niche site to be built on. An aged domain will allow you to be indexed in Google much faster than a new site. Your trustrank will be much higher with a domain that is at least one year old. The older the better, assuming it hasn’t been labeled as a SPAM site by Google.
The next step was determing what template we would use. I didn’t use any analytical method here other than I wanted to try out the BANS software to see what was new. My choices were either BANS or a Wordpress template and PhpBay.
I have installed the BANS script on the domain and I have it up and running currently. You can check out my Paintball Guns and Gear website to see what a basic Bans site looks like. I haven’t modified the template at all yet and just threw up a quick header that I made in about 10 minutes.
I want to stress again that this is the basic skin of the template. I will be dressing it up over the next few updates and adding a lot of search engine friendly content.
So far this has been pretty easy as BANS is very simple to get the basic store set up. I had very few problems and the new software seems to set up easier for me, maybe I am just getting better at it.
I will be adding paintball gun reviews and articles that will allow me to rank better in Google than the site currently will and then of course the absolute key to ranking in the SERPs is to build some back links to the site. The links in this article are my first attempt at it but I will share how and where I find links over the next few weeks.
So Phase 3 is going to be providing content and backlinks in order to build our search engine position results. I would prefer to rank well organically if we can so as to minimize the need to use an adwords campaign to drive traffic to the site.
So far so good, slower than I wanted it to be but all is going well.
I currently have 3 BANS sites up that are producing moderate income but the key to BANS sites is quantity. Even if you build one that only produces 10-20 dollars a month, multiply that by 100 sites and now you’re talking some decent money.
I have 3 other niche sites that I have under construction right now and I thought of a pretty neat experiment. I am building one in Wordpress and using phpbay to see how it compares to BANS. Specifically I am interested in how getting a Wordpress site to rank will be compared to a BANS site.
Once I have them both completed and with a similar amount of content and backlinks we will compare and contrast them. Certainly not scientific but interesting nonetheless, at least to me.
If you are interested in building your own websites you can find out more information about the two programs that I use at the links below. If you’re not familiar with phpbay it is definitely worth checking out.

1I’ve got quite a few BANS stores up and running (over 20) and… I do make some money from them (about $150 so far this month for example) but overall I kind of feel my overall time time spent vs money earning potential probably isnt that good… Maybe in the long run they’ll be a good deal. One thing I do like about them is that once they are up and running smoothly they are pretty much standalone… Its not like my blogs which I’m always worried about producing more fresh content for.

2@Jonny - Maybe so, maybe no. Depends on how well you are picking your niches and how well they have been SEOd etc. Are you ranking for your keywords? Have you tried using a PPC campaign to see how well you can get it to convert?
Most people put up a BANS site, slap some crappy content on it and then let them sit and hope for the best. That won’t get it.
I am not saying this is you….I am just speaking in general.
