I am sure you have heard the phrase that quitters never win. Stay the course. Stay on plan. Don’t give up. Keep at it. All of these ridiculous bits of advice mainly from people who haven’t enjoyed even a modicum of success themselves. Our society has taught us to admire those who don’t quit.
I say horse crap!
Quitting is good for you. If you don’t quit from time to time then you are probably failing.
There is a theory called the Paretto principle that states that statistically 80% of your results will come from 20% of your effort. This might be confusing at first but once you think about it, you will be surprised how true it is.
If 20% of your activity produces 80% of the results, then what is all that other time producing? Not much likely, so why would you keep doing it? Spending 80% of your time to yield 20% of your result seems like a great reason to quit to me.
I have another saying that I am fond of and that is…”Don’t confuse motion with progress.” Just because you are writing everyday, or building a niche site or whatever your choice of online activity is, don’t think that is what makes you successful. The only way you can measure your success, is if you are one of the few that actually have a defined goal.
Do you believe yet that sometimes quitting is good? If you aren’t willing to experiment with new things from time to time then you aren’t likely to get very far. To be successful you need to constantly be trying new things, exploring new tools, new methods, reacting to changes in the search engines, your competitors etc.
If your blog has flatlined then change it up.
If your niche site strategy is producing no results then change it up.
If your writing career has stalled then do something different.
Ever heard the definition of insanity? It’s doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Yet if you aren’t willing to quit from time to time, then you are going to do just that. The same thing, over and over, with the same crappy results.
How did not quitting become so popular? Experiment, test the limits. Try something and if it doesn’t work then quit and try something else. Just make sure you give it a good solid try or you may miss some great opportunities.
I am not advocating to quit something every week, just don’t be that person that plods along making no headway………forever. That’s just sad.
Keep quitting until you find the right chord. Your specialty might be BANS sites or you might be an ace at Google adwords or you might own Clickbank before you’re done. You will never know though, unless you try.
Quitting isn’t popular. It goes against everything we are taught from childhood but it’s a necessary evil. Quitters are branded as losers in our society but I have to tell you, if you don’t quit and try something new then you will keep getting the same results you are now.
The question is….are you happy with those results? Are you making the money you want to make? Are you enjoying the success you want to enjoy? If not, then quit…..just make sure you don’t give up.

3I couldn’t agree more - quitting for the sake of quitting is pointless but doing something that isn’t working is equally pointless. Quit what isn’t working and replace it with something new until you find something that will work. Great Advice!

6That’s so true. i’ve always thought that quitting wasn’t a bad thing. It confused me why some people would continue to work at something that just wasn’t working! I guess that wouldn’t exactly be called quitting, but rather “adjusting” or the term that so many big businesses use is “adapting to changing business conditions” or something like that!
Great post.
