danger.jpgMaking Money Online is EASY!

Most newbies start their quest to make money online by researching the opportunities available to them.  If you Google “Make Money Online” and start clicking on a few of the links you are barraged by “snake oil” salesman who promise that for $49.99 they will teach you how to make money online.  10 minutes a day and you can be a millionaire…just paypal them 49.99 before the last chance offer runs out.  Bull!

It’s a shame that so many great sources of information exist that are “tarnished” by these opportunistic vultures but no matter what you read, no matter what system you use, no matter how little time they say you will spend…it is simply not true that you can make millions spending 10 minutes a day.  Making Money online takes time and effort, and anyone who suggests otherwise is misguided at best and a con-man at worst.

Get Rich Quick!

I think the first thing we need to define is what is “quick,” because that will vary dramatically from person to person.  I think most people define quick as a few weeks and they think that a niche website and some adsense is all that is required to start raking in the dough. Wrong.

In my opinion it will take at least a year of dedicated work before most will see any kind of a sustainable income if ever.  I know it can be done much faster than that but I think it’s important to be conservative in your expectations otherwise you may become disenchanted and quit.

Capital can certainly affect your start up time…if you have the capability to purchase a website that already makes money then your ramp up time is considerably less but the majority of people seeking online money are starting with little to no money.  $49.99 isn’t the kind of capital I am talking about either…a website that has enough income to make a living from will sell well into the 5 figure range, in fact 12x monthly earnings is a commonly accepted multiplier although I caution you to not take that as gospel.

Making Money Online Requires No Investment

As I alluded to above, you can significantly impact your timeline with the right amount of capital applied in the right manner however for the majority of people this is not an option.  I will concede that it is possible to make money online with little to no investment but it is not free.  You will have expenses involved, you may or may not encounter upfront fixed costs such as a computer, a digital camera, a printer, an internet connection, hosting etc.  You will also need either the skills to build websites or the capital to buy them, you may or may not use PPC to drive traffic etc.  There are a host of hidden costs involved in Making Money Online…nothing comes for free.

Now clearly there is no question that you can save significantly with an online business vs an bricks and mortar business however you should go into it knowing that most people who succeed invest in themselves and in their business.

ANYONE Can Do It!

The optimist in me would like to think that anyone can do it but the simple facts are this…not everyone can.  Not everyone has the personality, temperament, skills, determination, drive or any of the many essential traits required to be successful.  It is important for you to assess whether working at a computer for hours on end with little to no social interaction with co-workers is for you.  Do you have the patience to start slow but build your empire brick by brick or are you the type of person that demands instant gratification.  Do you you need to be part of a team?  Can you drive yourself to produce day in and day out with no supervisor?

I am positive of one thing and that is simply this, you will positively fail to make any money online if you don’t try.  If you sit there staring at your screen for hours reading about what everyone else is doing and not taking action then you are guaranteed to fail.  The single biggest trait that separates those who make money from those who don’t…is the willingness to act on their ideas or plans.

Nobody Makes Money Online!

I am sure that you will hear this from your friends or family.  The world is full of people who are so cynical and so programmed to follow the 9-5 herd that they are convinced that it can’t be done.  They are so confident in their belief that they will attempt to dissuade you from your endeavor.  They might even go so far as to ostracize you for straying from the “herd” mentality.

They are absolutely right about one thing….they won’t be earning big money at anything because they are paralyzed.  They will never act on even the most blatant opportunity that is right in front of them.  They ensure that they won’t fail by never trying anything.

Ok there it is….my collection of the 5 biggest lies about Making Money Online.  Hopefully you have successfully navigated these iceburgs already in your journey to entrepreneurship and you are now well on your way to your goals.

Time to Fess up….are you making money online or are you still thinking about it?

  1. Hello,

Interesting article. I am building an Entrepreneurs Investors community. Our idea is to bring to entrepreneurs advice that will help them in the growth process. We are offering 50 free subscription for a full year. Just go to the website blog and leave us your email address. We will be honored if you can participate to our community.

I leave you the decision to publish the address of the website (thestreetmarket.com).

    Thanks and good work!

  2. Thanks. I will be sure to check it out.

  3. The goal of on-line life should be making a positive contribution to the web-experience of your visitor. If you cannot do that, then you will not make money. So, value must be created and then, if it is good enough, depending upon the nature of the good created, you will either receive financial support for your efforts ($$) or you will be rewarded in other ways.

  4. Well I tried all the free advice and I made $1.04 in 3 weeks. Can I retire now?

  5. @Keith – Well said…the market sets the price of any good or service and an online blog is no different. If you offer good service or content then the money will follow.

@Grandstan – :-) You could….but living in the streets can be tough on a guy. Keep at it….I started out very slowly. It’s very discouraging but I make anywhere between 500 and 1000 dollars a month regularly now and I have only started to really devote more time to the effort.

  6. I strongly agree with all 5 points.
    1. Making money online is not easy. It requires intensive learning and strong marketing skills.
    2. You won’t get rich quick. Most people are getting a dollar/day for AdSense or worse. Only small portion of online money makers are successful and make a fortune out of it.
    3. It requires investments. First with domain, then hosting, then all the time to write unique content, then money for advertising, effort to promote your site, etc.
    4. Not anyone can do it. Well, if you don’t speak English than you have already a big disadvantage. For the rest, no dummies will make money online out of thin air.
    5. People do make money online. JohnChow, ShoeMoney, ProBlogger etc are reporting their monthly income on their blogs. Website like Open Tips are made for AdSense. Well, Yahoo! and Google both make multi millions (or is it billions) per year.

So yeah, keep trying and learning.

  7. Amen. It is def NOT easy. But with some thought and effort, it IS possible.

  8. M too trying to make some $$ online … and have succeed in making some … have started a blog too … thinking to make some money by blogging now ;)

Puneet’s last blog post..Google Spins It’s Web to Site Creation & Management

  9. Its true that we can make money online but there will be hard work into it. Nothing comes easy and fast. For bloggers we have to get a high traffic of readers just to earn some money, and its not as easy as its sounds. A lot of research need to be done and a lot of people need to be consult. If you’re thinking in buying ebook says 10 minutes to get 100 dollars then forget it.

  10. I believe that there is no quick way to be rich unless you are born to rich parents who later give you all their treasures but let’s face it, we are all normal human trying to survive in the state of rat race where everyone working hard to get money. No easy money.

  11. You have shoot many beginners thinking. Ya you right, no fast money in this world but only working hard for money.

  12. Its sad how some ppl start a blog just to monetize it, thinking its easy. They should have a passion for blogging first and foremost, once ur blog is established, then the money will come – slowly but surely

  13. It takes a special kind of person to make money online. A person that promotes themselves and gives value to their visitors. It about establishing relationships and building trust. Everybody is not cut out for this. You must work hard to achieve your goals and never, I mean never quit!
