I know so many of us dream of making money online and being able to say good bye to the day job but have you ever put a pen to paper to see how easy of a feat that might be? It’s a very different proposition for everyone and depends wildly on what your standard of living is currently.
Most of us blog part time and kind of fool around with it on the side. I often wonder what I could accomplish if I only had more time in the day to work on my online endeavors. What could be?
I honestly don’t think it would be that difficult to make enough money to get by with but what most bloggers forget about are the benefits that come with working for a company that provides them. Let’s take your typical 40k dollar a year salary, that should be representative of an average income out there for many bloggers.
To gross 40k dollars a year you would have to make 3300 dollars per month with your blog. I already clear 1k “ish” dollars a month right now depending on the month and that is only working part time at it. I spend far more time on my niche sites lately than I do my blog.
Maybe this wouldn’t be so tough after all.
Ok so 3300 dollars a month translates to 833 dollars per week or slightly over 100 dollars a day. I really have to tell you that it wouldn’t be that difficult to pull in that kind of money BUT…and this is a big but if you are self employed you need to take into account the incidentals like health care, retirement plans, pensions and other assorted benefits that companies provide.
That 40k dollars a year quickly changes to about 60k dollars a year once you factor in the lost benefit of these perks.
Is that insurmountable? Maybe and maybe not, depends on your situation.
If you’ve been reading this blog for very long then you know I am much more of a fan of passive income than I am of active income. Passive income comes from things like a niche site that makes money for you 24/7 if things go well.
One could argue that passive income doesn’t exist because niche sites take a lot of effort to build and maintain but I have to tell you, that’s not true. I will agree that they can take a lot of work to get built the first time but after that they really only require small amounts of maintenance once a month or so. My best site currently is one I built 2 years ago and have hardly touched since.
I will add a few articles of content and build a few backlinks monthly but not anything extravagant. If I can build an army of these types of sites that all produce at least a few bucks a day then I will consider leaving that day job but for now, I make too much money to walk away. Plus I am a big chicken.
What I am doing is building an insurance policy. In this day and age of corporate downsizing, you just never know when your number is going to come up. If I ever have to leave my current company then I have no intentions of starting over somewhere else. I intend on going to the beach.

If quitting your job and working for yourself full time is something you aspire to then I would encourage you to figure out what your “number” is. How much would you have to make a year, a month, a week? What are the cost of your benefits? Could you sign on to your spouses benefit package?
Whatever your situation if your end goal is to work full time from home, then don’t be like most people and kind of stumble along hoping something good happens. Figure out what your number is, calculate what you would need to make a month and then work towards it.
It won’t happen by accident. It won’t happen without work so rather than hoping for something good to happen, MAKE something good happen. I am a firm believer that people make their own luck.
All of these are valid questions that only you can answer. For myself, blogging isn’t going to be the way I make my money full time. I blog because I enjoy it and I am still learning so I still do it. My real weapon of choice are passive income niche sites that are out there working 24 hours a day.
While I am sleeping, my niche sites are working. That’s the way to have it for me.
I won’t reveal my number but you can bet that I know exactly what I need to walk away from corporate America. I am building sites and backlinks every single day, so that when the time comes, I’ll be ready.
If you’re interested in building your own niche sites then one of the easiest ways to start is by using BANS aka Build a Niche Store software. It really makes it much easier than it normally would be.

1A $110 a day is my current goal and that would set me pretty much in the income bracket that I am already in. That at least would be the start to set me free from being a wage slave, of course I will continue to raise the goals as I have from the start which began at $1 a day(it was exciting to hit that!)
I am single, happy to live fairly modestly and my car is paid for so $110 would suit that well as a start - not huge but still amongst the highest wage earners on the planet percentage wise! and freedom of time is of course priceless.

2I am tempted to say $2000 a month and I’d quit, but if I was making that much part time and could continue to while getting a second income working I probably wouldn’t quit.
So my real number would be closer to $50,000 before I would quit.

3Hey Bill,
Good advice here. I think everyone that ultimately wants to own there own business falls in line with the same kind of people that fit the professional blogger/site creator anyway so it makes total sense for these to align. If your worth your wait and can be brining in $100/day then unless you do something really stupid it’s fairly safe to assume that amount will go up over time. Only weird thing for me would be all that time at the house and the need to get out more, another advantage of having a job somewhere that you have to report too.
