WTF Is it with Site Flipping
Have you ever sat back and watched the MMO world? I have for the last few months and I have to say it’s either funny or pathetic and probably both. There is definitely a class structure out there….you have the upper crust, then you have some medium sized, reasonably well respected blogs and then you have the herd.
Herd Mentality
The herd is notorious for following the leader and charging off in whatever direction those at the front take. They don’t think for themselves and they simply follow the ass in front of them. The latest example of this is site flipping. WTF is it with site flipping? It seems like a 5 or 6 months ago one of the numbnuts, I have no idea who, must have posted about making a billion dollars flipping sites and what do you think happened?
It seems like 85% of the MMO splogs followed that lead and started posting about how they too make a fortune flipping sites and for $9.99 you can download their e-book and learn how to do it too. It makes my stomach churn reading this crap.
I am a regular lurker on a few blogs and several forums and you can’t spit in any direction without hitting the latest site flipping guru or site flipping e-book or site flipping monkey chasing his banana. As soon as the first monkey posts about selling a site for a few bucks, then the next monkey sees it and wants the same banana. Before you know it, yet another industry is born. Garbage sites are built overnight and put up for sale before they are even indexed, sold for 119 dollars on Sitepoint and on to the next one.
Blah.
Passive Income
If that is your thing then more power to you. In my opinion most of the site flippers are guys who tried to build niche sites and couldn’t make any money. So instead of investing the time in learning it, they install wordpress, hack a few articles and put the site up on the block. Again no harm…but it’s my rant post.
If you were able to make more than a few hundred dollars this way a month then I’d be shocked but the biggest problem that I have with that for me….is that it still requires me to work. I don’t want another job, I want to replace my existing job with a passive, online income that can be managed a few hours a week at most and can be done from anywhere in the world.
The magic of niche site building is that once it is built and getting good traffic you can pretty much slow the work on the site to a trickle. A few content articles a month, a link here or there and you are good to go in most niches. I’ve gone weeks at a time before without even touching my sites and the income still generates itself. In fact, I was going to write an article for one of my sites today but I decided to clean the cobwebs off this site and actually post. I miss blogging but it takes too much time, I actually have to work at it.
So, in my opinion, if I need to constantly keep my site mill running and grinding out sausage sites then that’s too much work for my taste. I am all about passive income and quite frankly I think anyone who has enough skill to build and flip websites, probably has enough skill to build niche sites that could last. Different strokes for different folks I guess but if you’re a site flipper…then FLIP the damn sites and quit trying to sell e-books on how to do it.
Whatever you do really is none of my business and I don’t really care but I think that if I read another blog post about site flipping from some little numbnut that thinks a couple of hundred bucks is worth the time then I think Iwill probably throw up just a little bit.
/Rant.
Oh before I forget…cause I love the Grizz…..Site Build It Blows.

I don’t like to work either! It takes no skills to build a crappy blog to sell it to idiots who will buy it for $100. All they need to do is click a couple mouse buttons and some copy/pasting. I want to build up a huge blog with a big community and fan base. That won’t feel like work when you really enjoy what you are doing.

Yeah I don’t get this one either.
If a domain makes more than it costs to host it and register the domain itself, why wouldn’t you keep it?
Just get one up and running, then move on to the next. Even if they only make $50 profit a year, get a couple of hundred of them and it starts to add up.
LOL, good post. Its just like same old rehashed crap… the trend goes this way, someone does a site and after three day he listed it in sitepoint, then the BIN is reached at $47,, voila! the dude thinks his now an expert and starts an ebook that sells for some cheap price…

I have read about people setting up automated blog, let them run, for some time automatically adding content every day. Once it has been online for what, a year maybe, they flip it. Keep in mind that these guys are probably running 100 or 1000 of these kind of blogs. You probably won’t be able to automate everything, but you might get closer to passive income, than making all of them manual. However, this is moving into the blackhat area, which I won’t get into. Just a thought.

Everybody is just ranting. How did griz tell you to support the site build cause? Was it through email?
Dude I tried to find your name on your “about” page, but couldn’t find anything, so I’ll call you “Joe”
Are you still blogging here, what’s happening?
Hi Bill,
I am spending minimal time on forums and blogs. I watch the RSS headlines of blog posts in my FireFox bookmarks and look out for any posts that look like reading mostly for entertainment.
I think our time is best spent on doing things that seem best for our businesses rather than blogging such as posting blog comments that link to our sites.

You are right sir!thanks for your info.
I absolutely loved this post. You have such great blog, and I really love your writing style. I am a regular reader of your blog, and have never commmented before. I would just like to let you know that this is probably one of my favourite blogs, and I hope you never quit. Keep up the good work.
Hmm, a week and no response…
I guess that’s a no then?
I’m also annoyed by this site flipping craze. Any practical person should know that (most of the time) listed profit is going to be bloated to push the resell value up. Then after they overbid at a forum auction, thinking they’re getting a nice passive income, the income drops out because the seller’s ad campaign is gone (sometimes the site is even on the brink of being slapped by Google).
There are a few scammers flipping forums now. They use a trick to offer great pay for a forum posting job, bail on paying dozens of posters, and then sell the “improved” site off to someone else.
Wow! I landed here by accident and I find this extremely interesting, shall we say, rant! I went back to some other posts and find that the site is quite interesting.
I shall return again, but why are there so few posts?

The horribly sad thing is, that the people who are site flipping are the ones who aren’t even successful with their blogs, they’re just continuing a process of creating horrible sites for us readers to unfortunately fall upon..

The opportunity to earn a quick buck is what makes people make crappy sites and sell them for $100.I really don´t understand people who buy these sites because you can easily create one your self. The internet is full of information.

Register it with google. There are lots of promotional things you can do to get your name out there. Plus throw the website name around on forums and websites, making sure not to make it sound like you are advertising but more like advice. Make it seem like it will be their gain visiting your site and not yours.
Surely if you’ve built a site that has the potential to be profitable, you’d hold on to it?
I don’t get it
Nice article and keep the good job!

Sometimes, I don’t see the point too on working so hard for your site and then making the somewhat unwise decision to someone else for the big $$$. Although there are also times that you have to ouweigh options carefully. I don’t really think that those who flip their sites are dummies, but if the reason for flipping the site is just because of the big $$$, then that is a dummy.
The Internet just has way too many useless sites and they keep breeding like rats. Looking forward to your future posts. Thanks.

I found this post amusing and dead on! lol Even as much as I shift projects or “plans” I somehow go back to just niche sites with adding content.

I agree with your views about site flipping. If the site really is quality, obviously the person would rather keep it for themselves. All the hype about site flipping just makes it easier to sell junk sites. The people who do well with site flipping often have developed some semi automated system for creating sites quickly. Other site flippers, take built websites and do upgrades to increase their value. There may be good potential in that.
Still I also want passive income. I want to build up my own websites so that they can make a lot of money regardless if I have the time to work on them each week.
[...] WTF Is it with Site Flipping – by Bill The Blog Entrepreneur [...]
I sold a site once – it was a Wordpress-MU technology blog site written by women, simply because when I started my full time SEO job I had no time to keep up with it anymore. I do regret it a bit, much more could have been done with it and the new owner isn’t paying the potential justice.
People are always attracted by colorful stories about how to earn a million, while doing nothing. This will always work!
Oh man, got some serious issues with site flipping dude… You talk of passive income, yet if you think about it: you could buy a site cheap in a profitable niche — add massive value to it by flipping it then either collect commissions, adsense, etc — or sell for big bucks.
Know what you’re saying about all the guides out there though. Anyhow, just wanted to mention that as don’t like seeing a bad name given out and feel you sould consider it as a profitable passive income strategy.
Sincerely,
Sam.

I wrote a post about this recently aswell. I do not agree with you completely, but I do think that “Flipping websites for cash” is highly ovverrated. And, it’s usually not that worth it. I prefer to continue working on my sites to increase their revenue, rather than sell them and start over again.
Cheers,
Johnny

I’d like to hear more about how site build it blows. I’ve seen bloggers and webmasters endorse it but I never really seen the value. Nice rant!
